In the center of the Basque Country

The journey begins with a stroll through

Biarritz — an elegant seaside resort where the Atlantic meets the architectural splendor of the Belle Époque. In the early 20th century, the city became a true “summer capital of Europe” and a favorite retreat for royalty, aristocrats, artists, and writers. Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Sarah Bernhardt, Chateaubriand, Stravinsky — and, of course, Coco Chanel, who opened one of her first fashion houses here, laying the foundation of the CHANEL empire — all visited Biarritz. The city still preserves the spirit of that era in the architecture of its palaces and hotels, including the legendary Hôtel du Palais, built at the initiative of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III.
As you stroll along the picturesque promenade, you can admire the lighthouse, the old fishing port, and the famous Rock of the Virgin — a symbol of Biarritz and one of the most scenic corners of the Atlantic coast.

The route continues to Cambo-les-Bains, where the Villa Arnaga rises — an architectural gem in the neo-Basque style with Art Nouveau elements. This house, once owned by playwright Edmond Rostand, became a cultural center of its time.

The next stop is Espelette: a village with a thousand-year history, where bright red peppers dry on the facades of houses. Here, you can visit a farm and learn about the traditions of producing this regional symbol.

You will also discover the authentic villages of Sare and Ainhoa, both of which are listed among the most beautiful villages in France. Their white-and-red facades, ancient churches, and well-kept streets create a unique atmosphere of coziness and history.

Next awaits the charming town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz — a coastal gem with a rich past, where in 1660 the wedding of Louis XIV and Infanta Maria Theresa took place. Today, Saint-Jean-de-Luz delights visitors with cozy streets, elegant shops, a sandy beach sheltered from the waves, and the renowned Basque pastry tradition. Be sure to try canelés and the gâteau basque with cherry filling.

A must-visit is Bayonne, the historical capital of the French Basque Country. With its Roman roots, the city enchants with narrow streets, half-timbered houses, red and green shutters, and cozy squares. The majestic Gothic Cathedral of Saint Mary towers over the city, listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site as the Way of Saint James. Bayonne is famous for its chocolate, the Basque Museum, its festive atmosphere, and, of course, its legendary ham, made here according to ancient recipes. The spirit of the city is a fusion of Basque character, Gascon liveliness, and French charm.

Along the way, you may enjoy gastronomic stops: tasting Basque ham and visiting a workshop where the legendary Makila canes are handcrafted — a symbol of respect presented to distinguished figures from Charles de Gaulle to the Pope.

The final note is the discovery of the region’s culinary and cultural heritage: Atlantic seafood, Ossau-Iraty sheep cheeses, Basque sweet pie with cherry or cream filling, foie gras, traditional Basque homemade dishes, and creative interpretations from Michelin-starred chefs, as well as local AOC Irouléguy wine and Basque cider, served with a special ritual.

The program may also include, upon request, a surfing lesson on the Atlantic coast, where Biarritz and its surroundings are considered one of the best spots in Europe; a master class or trial game of pelota — the national Basque sport; and a visit to a traditional espadrille workshop, where this iconic cotton-and-jute footwear is still handcrafted.

This itinerary is designed for 2–3 days and can be adjusted and expanded according to the client’s wishes. Each stop offers a unique blend of flavor and history, creating a deep immersion into the spirit of the Basque Country.

If desired, the route may be extended to include a surf lesson in San Sebastián, a pelota game with a local instructor, or a visit to a craft atelier, where traditional espadrilles made from cotton and jute — symbols of Spanish summer and simplicity turned high fashion — are created by hand.
